Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) said the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and its International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) had commended it for responding to 92% of methane emission alerts, one of the highest response rates in the region.
The commendation followed a training workshop held in Tunis from October 18 to 22 on the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) and the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP 2.0), NOC said in a statement.
The workshop formed part of efforts overseen by NOC Chairman Masoud Suleman to strengthen compliance with international environmental standards, the corporation said.
Organised in cooperation with UNEP, IMEO and the European Union delegation to Libya, with technical support from consultancy Carbon Limits, the workshop built on earlier sessions held in Tripoli.
It aimed to improve the ability of technical teams at NOC and its subsidiaries to monitor methane emissions, verify data and respond promptly to alerts.
NOC attributed its response rate to coordination between designated contacts at its subsidiaries and its General Department of Health, Safety, Environment, Security and Renewable Energy.
