South Africa has announced temporary fuel levy cuts costing 10 billion rand to ease pressure on motorists, starting on November 4, as part of its 2026 mini-budget.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said the government would cut the levy by 1.50 rand per litre for petrol and 3 rand per litre for diesel from November 4 to December 1, 2026.

The reductions would then be scaled back to 1 rand per litre for petrol and 1.50 rand per litre for diesel until January 5, 2027, when the relief would end.

“The relief will cost the fiscus R10 billion,” Godongwana said during the presentation of the mini-budget.

The announcement follows recent protests by motorists in parts of South Africa over high fuel prices.
