Ghana: Armed Men Storm Ghana Power Generation Company Premises
Twelve suspected armed robbers stormed the premises of Ghana Power Generation Company at the Tema Freezones Enclave on Wednesday, July 28, 2021, to engage in robbery.
The twelve suspected robbers, armed with pump action guns and machetes, blocked the inner perimeter of GPGC.
GPGC had been in the Ghanaian media recently, following the award of $134 million judgment it secured against the Republic of Ghana for termination of an Emergency Power Purchase agreement it signed with Ghana for the procurement of 107MW power.
A statement from Tema Regional Police Command, which confirmed the incident, said the Kpone District Police Patrol team received a distress call at about 23:30 hours on Wednesday.
The statement said the team immediately responded to the call and on arrival at the scene, were met with sporadic gunfire from the suspected robbery gang who was attempting to flee.
“After carefully studying from where the gunshots were coming, the police team returned fire which hit a member of the gang, who was wielding a sharp machete, while the other members succeeded to abscond,” the statement said.
According to the statement, “Police then rushed the injured suspect to the Police Hospital for medical attention but was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival by a Medical Doctor.”
The body had subsequently been deposited at the hospital’s morgue awaiting autopsy and further investigations into the incident.
Ghana: NPA Boss Visits Deplorable TOR-Kpone Road; Assures Tanker Drivers Of Fixing It
The newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, has paid a working visit to the Tema-Kpone Industrial enclave which hosts a number of petroleum products facilities to assess the state of road network in the area.
He was in the company of the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Stephen Pambin Jalulah, and Director of Urban Roads, Abass Awolu.
The visit follows a promise by Dr Mustapha Hamid to pay a working visit to the area when a delegation by the Chairman of Ghana National Tanker Drivers’ Association, Mr George Nyanu, and Chairman of LPG Tanker Drivers’ Association, Shafiu Mohammed, called on him to welcome him to the downstream petroleum sector.
The delegation raised concerns about the deplorable state of the road network within the Tema industrial enclave which hosts petroleum installation during a meeting held at the office of the National Petroleum Authority on Friday, July 23, 2021.
The state of the road network between the Tema Oil Refinery and Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited junction had been in deplorable state without attention by successive governments.
In August 2020, Ghana’s Roads and Highways Minister, Kwasi Amoako Atta cut the sod for the construction of road. However, eleven months after the sod cutting, there has been no show on the road.
In an interview with some drivers and managers of the Tank Farm in the area, they expressed disappointment in the government for failing to fix the road despite the huge tax revenues generated from the area.
In a post on NPA’s Facebook sighted by energynewsafrica com, it said the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Stephen Pambin Jalulah, while addressing the gathering, stated that work on the 5.4km VALCO-T.O.R-Kpone stretch will soon commence.
“As an interim measure to mitigate their plight, the Deputy Minister them assured that heavy equipment will be brought in by close of week to start work on the Tankers Park,” it said.
Throwing more light on the construction, Director of Urban Roads, Abass Awolu said the first 2km, which will be dualised, will be concrete given the heavy nature of the road while the remaining parts will be asphalted.
He said measures would be put in place to ensure the construction works would not inconvenience motorists.

Ghana: Energy Minister Charges GCMCL Board To Work As A Team
Ghana’s Minister for Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has charged the newly constituted Board of Directors of the Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company to work together in the interest of the company.
This, he says would ensure that the company grows and becomes profitable.
Dr Opoku Prempeh made this call when he inaugurated the newly constituted Board appointed by President Akufo Addo on Tuesday afternoon.
He specifically asked the Board to strive to wipe away the negative press that the company had had in times past.
“I am aware that in times past, the GCMC had challenges spanning workers’ agitation to some management issues. I am also aware that efforts have been made, collectively, to ensure that these issues are put to rest in the greater interest of staff and management to enable the company focus on its mandate. I am urging the new Board to provide the necessary direction and leadership so that the negative press that the company has unfortunately had will be wiped away from history,” he said.
He continued that “team work and harmony is a recipe for growth and productivity. As the GCMC aims to achieve profitable growth as the premier manufacturer of LPG cylinder and other metal fabricated products in the sub-region, I want to charge the Board to be keen on industry standards and quality assurance and improve the efficiency of service delivery.
“This is critical to the business development and advancement of the company.”
The sector Minister said as Ghana deepens its efforts in gas production, the company will be at the forefront of the sector and, therefore, it will take a lot of innovation to make it attractive in Ghana and within the sub-region.
Chairman for the Board assured the Minister they would work assiduously to raise the image and reputation of the Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company.
Director General for the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), Stephen Asamoah Boateng urged the Board to live up to the confidence reposed in them by the President.
“We count on your support and we know we will succeed,” he added.
The nine-member Board includes CEO of the company, Madam Frances Awurabena Asiam, Nana Serwaa Owusu and Nana Forson Danso.
The rest are Adelaide Ntim, Crisler Akwei Ankrah, Bradley Kwaku Poku-Amankwah and Christopher Archer. It also has Madam Hannah Ashade as member.

The Director General of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), Prof. Benjamin Jabez Botwe Nyarko, has been appointed as the chairman for the newly constituted board of the Nuclear Power Ghana (NPG).
Other members of the board are Ing Emmanuel Antwi Darkwa, CEO of VRA, William Owuraku Aidoo, Deputy Minister for Power in charge of Finance and Infrastructure, Dr. Stephen Yamoah, Executive Director of Nuclear Power Ghana, Patricia Appiagyei, MP for Asokwa, Anthony Selom Dzadzra and Dr. Robert Bright Sogbaji, Nuclear Power Coordinator at the Ministry of Energy.
In a brief remarks, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Minister for Energy, expressed his belief that the new board would co-ordinate the efforts of all the stakeholders to ensure that the country’s vision of establishing nuclear power plant is realised.
He charged the board to focus on providing relevant resources to build a strong safety culture and resilience management systems which will ensure that in the planning and development of nuclear infrastructure and related activities in Ghana, government’s purpose would be achieved.

ExxonMobil’s Fresh Oil Find Off Guyana Could Form Basis For Future Development
US oil supermajor, ExxonMobil, has made an oil discovery at the Whiptail well, located in the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana, which could form the basis for future development.
The Whiptail-1 well encountered 246 feet (75 meters) of net pay in high-quality oil-bearing sandstone reservoirs.
Drilling is also ongoing at the Whiptail-2 well, which has encountered 167 feet (51 meters) of net pay in high-quality oil-bearing sandstone reservoirs. Drilling continues at both wells to test deeper targets, and results will be evaluated for future development.
The Whiptail discovery is located approximately 4 miles southeast of the Uaru-1 discovery that was announced in January 2020 and approximately 3 miles west of the Yellowtail field.
Whiptail-1 is being drilled in 5,889 feet (1,795 meters) of water by the Stena DrillMAX. The previous discovery, which was announced last month and also located in the Stabroek Block, was also drilled using the same Stena drillship.
On the other hand, Whiptail-2, which is located 3 miles northeast of Whiptail-1, is currently being drilled in 6,217 feet (1,895 meters) of water by the Noble Don Taylor.
“This discovery increases our confidence in the resource size and quality in the southeast area of the Stabroek Block and could form the basis for a future development as we continue to evaluate the best sequence of development opportunities within the block”, said Mike Cousins, senior vice president of exploration and new ventures at ExxonMobil.
ExxonMobil envisions at least six projects online by 2027 and sees potential for up to 10 projects to develop its current recoverable resource base.
The Liza Destiny floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel is currently producing about 120,000 barrels of oil per day.
The startup of Liza Phase 2 remains on target for early 2022, and the Liza Unity FPSO expects to sail from Singapore to Guyana in late August 2021. The Unity has a production capacity of approximately 220,000 barrels of oil per day.
The hull for the Prosperity FPSO vessel is complete, and topsides construction activities are ongoing in Singapore with a startup target of 2024. The first Payara development well was spudded in June 2021, and the offshore SURF installation will begin in 3Q 2021.
Yellowtail has been identified as the fourth development project in the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana with an anticipated startup in 2025. Following necessary government approvals and a final investment decision, this project will develop the Yellowtail and Redtail fields, which are located about 19 miles (30 kilometres) southeast of the Liza developments, and potentially adjacent resources.

South Africa: Sasol Vaccinates 20,000 Employees, Service Providers Against Covid-19
Sasol, an integrated energy and chemical company, has launched a five-day vaccination drive expected to see about 20,000 employees and service providers vaccinated against Covid-19.
The exercise is in partnership with the Government of Mpumalanga.
In a statement, Sasol said the exercise is in preparation for upcoming maintenance shutdown of its operations.
The company said the vaccination drive is an added measure to safeguard all those who would be involved in the activity.
“By getting a vaccine, individuals do not only protect themselves, but protect their loved ones, colleagues and their community,” said Mashudu Ndou, Vice President and Head Corporate of Community Affairs for Sasol Secunda Operations.
Sasol Secunda Operations plans to hold its annual maintenance work from August 30 to September 24. This will involve workers from different regions.
Sasol said that it would continue to observe health and safety guidelines during the work. However, the company hopes that the vaccination drive would be an added measure to safeguard workers from COVID-19.
Mpumalanga would provide trained personnel and vaccines to support the drive.
Provincial Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane and Health MEC Sasekani Manzini attended the launch of the drive. They also toured the Sasol Medical Centre in Secunda.
The premier called for collaboration between the government, the private sector and the media to drive positive messages on the vaccine. Mtsweni-Tsipane said the partnership with Sasol should encourage other companies to take similar steps.
Mpumalanga has provided resources such as the vaccines and trained personnel for the Sasol drive.
Mpumalanga plans to focus on Emalahleni and Mkhondo next.

Ghana: BOST Ordered To Pay GH₵9.9 Million Judgment Debt To Hask Oil
A High Court In Accra, capital of Ghana, has ordered the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation (BOST) to pay a total of GHS9,962, 118.84 to Hask Oil Company Limited as interest accrued on a bank facility the company took while its products were in the custody of BOST, the defendant.
According to report filed by the Ghana News Agency, the court ruled in favour of the plaintiff because of BOST’s refusal to release the plaintiff’s petroleum products for sale to repay the credit facility.
“The court further directed that interest at the rate of 30% per annum, being the default rate being charged by the facility bank on the above sum from February 28, 2011 till date of final payment,” the report said.
According to the plaintiff, in July 2013, it stored its imported petroleum products in the defendant’s storage tanks.
It said the products were financed with a credit facility from Fidelity Bank, whose terms included among others, a default interest rate of 30 percent per annum and an execution of a lien or right to set off over a fixed deposit investment with the cedi equivalent of $2 million belonging to one J.K Horgle, the majority stakeholder of the plaintiff’s company.
This was in an event that the plaintiff defaulted in the repayment of the facility.
It said on 27th October, 2014, when Fidelity Bank wrote to the plaintiff demanding the payment of the credit facility, the plaintiff, on 31st October, through its solicitors, wrote to the defendant and demanded the payment of the value of the outstanding products with interests thereon.
It said they also drew the attention of the defendant to the credit facility with Fidelity Bank.

Trina Solar Sets New World Record Of 23.03% Aperture Efficiency For 210 Vertex P-Type Perc Module
Trina Solar’s State Key Laboratory of Photovoltaic Science and Technology (SKL) announced that its proprietary Vertex high-efficiency p-type monocrystalline silicon module, based on 66 pcs of 210 mm x 210 mm high-efficiency PERC cells, has achieved a record aperture module efficiency of 23.03% for larger-area industrial silicon p-type modules.
This is independently confirmed by third-party certification laboratories by both TÜV Rheinland and TÜV Nord with identical efficiency result.
The researchers in the SKL developed a new Multi-Busbar (MBB) technology to improve optical shading, and developed a new hybrid soldering technology to minimize the gap between cells.
These technologies greatly improve the module efficiency, with solar cells from the production lines of 210 mm high efficiency PERC cells.
Earlier this year, Trina Solar was the first one to release a new generation of 670W Vertex module, using 66 pcs of 210 mm p-type PERC cells. This time, Trina solar demonstrates that its technology leadership in 210 commercialized modules, not only in terms of ultra-high power, but also the ultra-high efficiency.

Ethiopia: AfDB Approves $71 Million Loan To Finance Ethiopia- Djibouti Electricity Interconnection Project
The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $71 million loan to Ethiopia for the electricity interconnection project between Ethiopia and Djibouti.
The $71 million facility, which is being provided through the African Development Fund (ADF), will be used for the construction of new infrastructure to facilitate electricity exchanges between Ethiopia and Djibouti.
Co-financed by the World Bank, the project involves the construction of new infrastructure, including a 190-km double-circuit 230kV transmission line linking Galafi and Nagad. Each circuit will have a rated power of 200MVA.
Galafi is on the Djibouti side of the border with Ethiopia. The capacity of the Nagad (Ethiopia) substation will be increased to transfer electricity from Ethiopia’s national grid to Djibouti’s grid.
The stakes are high for both East African countries.
“Domestic electricity generation in Djibouti is currently dominated by fossil fuels (123 MW according to Power Africa).
“As a result, the country’s electricity production is highly dependent on international oil prices,’’ a report by African Energy Portal said.
This situation, the report said, has had a negative impact on the cost of electricity supply and on the country’s balance of payments.
The high price of electricity is considered one of the main factors limiting Djibouti’s economic growth, according to the World Bank.
The inter-connection with Ethiopia would enable Djibouti to benefit from low-cost electricity generated from renewable sources.
Ethiopia is implementing major infrastructure projects to boost its installed capacity in the coming years.
This is the case with the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which will have a large power plant capable of delivering 6,450MW of power.
With this installation, which will deliver its first MW in 2022, Ethiopia is well placed to boost the electricity networks of the countries of the Horn of Africa, and beyond.

Burkinabe Minister for Energy, Dr. Bachir Ismael Ouadraogo, has held talks with Ghana’s Minister for Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, in a bid to deepen economic cooperation between the two countries, especially in the area of gas supply and export of power.
Dr Ouadraogo led a delegation to visit his counterpart, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, in Ghana’s Ministry of Energy, Accra, capital of Ghana.
The purpose of the visit was to discuss Burkina Faso’s energy needs, particularly with respect to its mining sector.
“This means that the Energy Commission, Ghana Gas and the GNPC will have to come together for a technical discussion on the way forward. I also disclosed that the current stringing of power cables as part of effort to upgrade our systems is expected to be completed by the end of August this year and that this should enable us deal much better with the issue of power export,” his post said.
Ghana and Burkina Faso have longstanding warm relations in several areas.
The Minister said, “I am confident that within the power sector, our relationship will soon enter another exciting phase.”

Ghana: GRIDCo Appoints Mark Baah As Acting CEO
Ghana’s power transmission company, GRIDCo, has appointed Ing. Mark Awuah Baah as its Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
This follows the successful end of the tenure of Mr. Jonathan Amoako-Baah as Chief Executive of the company.
Prior to his appointment, Ing. Mark Awuah Baah was a director in charge of Systems Operations of the company.
A circular signed by Board Secretary, Monica Senanu, who is also the Director for Legal Services, confirmed the new appointment.
“We take this opportunity to congratulate Ing. Mark Awuah Baah on his appointment and wish him well as he begins his tenure,” the letter said.
It also expressed gratitude to the outgone CEO for his services and contribution to GRIDCo.
Ing. Mark Awuah Baah was among staff of VRA who were moved to join GRIDCo when the country’s electricity sector was unbundled, leading to the creation of the power transmission company.
Mark Baah was appointed Director of Systems Operations at Ghana Grid Company Limited in 2017.
He was previously the Manager, Market Operations and the Special Assistant to the Chief Executive of GRIDCo, was instrumental in the transition and operationalisation of GRIDCo.

Dubai: Over 57 Percent Of African Energy Ministers Confirm Attendance Of African Oil Week
Organisers of African Oil week, Hyve Group Plc, says over 57 percent of countries have pledged the attendance of their Ministers of Energy or Petroleum or government leaders at this year’s programme scheduled for Dubai, UEA, from November 8-11.
So far, a host of ministers and former presidents who have confirmed their participation include Mauritania, Ghana, Namibia, Kenya, Burkina Faso, Mali, ROC and DRC.
This year’s event will also see in attendance leading CEOs of oil and gas firms, including Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of Total Energies, Rahul Dhir, CEO of Tullow Oil and Mark Heine, CEO of Fugro.
The organisers of Africa Oil Week have been criticised for moving Africa’s flagship oil and gas event to Dubai.
A former Secretary General of African Petroleum Producers Association, H.E Mahaman Laouan Gaya described the decision by the organisers as a sign of poor leadership.
“Africans need to know that our dignity should not be given away. This is a clear sign of poor leadership. Africa will not reach its global potential if we continue to see supposedly investment promotion-focused organisations abandoning the continent at the smallest challenge,” H.E Mahaman Laouan Gaya said recently.
“The African Oil Industry is at the cross roads, and going into COP26, we need to have an African agenda on energy transition and energy poverty. These discussions cannot be had in Dubai. African Petroleum Producers and other energy producers should distance themselves from this initiative of taking Africans to Dubai,” he further added.
Equatorial Guinean Minister for Mines and Hydrocarbons, H.E Gabriel M. Obiang Lima also recently took on the organisers and warned IOCs operating in the Central African country not to participate in the event.
He urged his fellow ministers and other industry stakeholders to cancel their participation in the Dubai initiative.
However, his appeal seems to have fallen on deaf ears as majority of the continent’s Energy Ministers have confirmed their participation in the upcoming event.
In a press statement, Hyve Group Plc, organisers of Africa Oil Week, announced that it has signed a three-year deal with the CTICC in Cape Town, for the hosting of the Africa Oil Week and Future Energy Series in 2022 and beyond.
This, according to them, is reaffirmation of their long-term commitment to the continent.

Energy Efficiency: A Weapon To Combat Climate Change And Rising Energy Costs

“Energy Efficiency” is a term often used in many discussions of climate change or global warming and its mitigation. The term has become an important part of policy agenda often pursued as part of the solution to climate calamity. Energy efficiency is important because it is linked to reducing carbon emissions, cleaning the air we breathe, improving the competitiveness of businesses and reducing energy costs for consumers.
There are various ways to describe what energy efficiency is. From scientific point of view and stemming from the technical word Efficiency, it is the ratio of the useful work performed in a process to the total energy or heat taken in. This is simply described using the formula (useful output of a process/energy input of the process) and is listed as a percentage between 0 and 100. In general, the term refers to using less energy to produce the same amount of services or useful output. The European Union (EU) Energy Efficiency Directive defines it as the ratio of output of performance, service, goods or energy, to input of energy.
The foundation of energy efficiency is technology. Technological advances lower the amount of energy a product uses while performing at the same level, thus promoting energy efficiency. Energy efficient technologies are in all parts of the energy conversion chain: from exploration and production of primary energy resources like oil, gas, coal or nuclear, to electricity generation and oil refineries, to electricity grids and to the final use in transportation, buildings and industry.
Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation
People often confuse Energy Efficiency with Energy Conversation, however, there is quite a bit of a difference between the two. The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) describes the two concept simply as; using technology that require less energy to perform the same task to achieve energy efficiency, and adjusting behavior that results in the use of less energy to achieve energy conservation.
When you replace a home appliance, for example washing machine or an office equipment such as a printer and projector, with a more energy efficient model, the new machinery will provide the same service but with a lesser energy input. This is what is deemed as being energy efficient. Energy conservation will however require you to reduce usage or go without the service in order to save energy. Under both concepts, money is saved on energy bills. Nevertheless, “Energy Efficiency” is not “Energy Conservation”, though related.
Energy Efficiency as a Climate Solution
Global efforts so far to mitigate climate change peaked with the passing of the international treaty, the “Paris Agreement” in 2015. Through the agreement, 195 countries adopted the first-of its kind universal and legally binding, global climate deal. The target of the agreement is limiting the global average temperature rise to well below 2°C, while aiming to limit the increase to 1.5°C.
Seeing as energy production and use is one of the primary causes of climate change, international bodies and organizations have developed policies and goals centered on tackling Climate change through energy efficiency. The United Nation (UN), as part of its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set the SDG Goal 7; Ensuring Access to Affordable, Reliable, Sustainable and Modern Energy for All. The targets to help achieve SDG 7 covers universal access, renewable energy and the doubling of the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency by 2030. According to official documents, by the end of 2016, a minimum of 137 countries had enacted some sort of energy efficiency policy, and at least 149 countries had enacted one or more energy efficiency targets as reported in the United Nations Policy Brief 04. The SDG 7.3 target (doubling of the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency by 2030) is being tracked through improvements in energy intensity.
Energy efficiency has become that powerful weapon in the armory to combat climate change since the math of it is simple: energy not used means emissions not generated. The Energy Efficiency Impart Report 2019 provided a great insight on the wide impacts of energy efficiency investments, innovation and policies. It was reported that, but for the energy efficiency investments made since 1980, the United States (US) with a doubled energy productivity from 1970, would have seen energy emissions and consumption 60 percent higher than what was recorded in 2019. Thanks to essentially six (6) energy efficiency polices that were adopted by the US, energy consumption remained largely flat in spite of an ever-growing population, increasing appliances and devices usage, and increasing vehicle miles traveled. This goes to support the big opportunities we stand to benefit in future. There is no stopping the increasing trend of energy consumption. However, economic growth can be de-coupled from energy use such that increasing economic activities will not automatically translate directly into increasing energy production and consumption beyond the capacity of the earth.
Energy Efficiency Metrics
For purposes of tracking and improvement, energy consumption, a key parameter to energy assessment can be determined through various indicators, at different aggregate levels; economy-wide scale or sectorial scale. This is because a number of factors outside energy efficiency can influence the trend in energy use or consumption. Taking into accounts other factors like economic structure, level of activity or production in a country and behavioral changes, energy efficiency indicators can serve as a proxy for measuring energy efficiency. The indicators can be used for historical trend analysis, cross-country comparisons (comparison with best practice) and to design policy and monitor progress overtime. The indicators also serve as input to economic and technological models.
A few international bodies have worked on indicator initiatives with the aim of identifying best practice globally and developing ways to apply them. The International Energy Agency (IEA) Energy Indicators project, the WEC-ADEME Energy Efficiency Indicators and Policies project and three (3) World Bank country reports on energy efficiency (on Russia, Turkey and Vietnam) are some of the initiatives developed, according to Phylipsen (2010). Each project, according to the author, adopted different approaches and focused on different part of the spectrum. There is the aggregate approach adopted by IEA, of starting from the top of the energy efficiency indicator pyramid (total by sector), and pushing further down through gathering of additional data and developing new indicators for lower aggregation levels (process efficiencies).
For an economy-wide measure, energy use is often compared to gross domestic product (GDP), to give the energy intensity (measured for example in kilowatt-hours per euro). The European Environment Agency (EEA) defines energy intensity as the ratio between gross inland energy consumption (GIEC) and gross domestic product (GIEC/GDP). It is however not simply an inverse of energy efficiency but a top-down or aggregated look at energy use in an economy, which is affected by a nation’s climate, heating and cooling requirements, lifestyle, amount of indoor space, population density, dependence on primary materials, economic structure (industrial versus service-based) among others (Watts, 2002). From New Zealand Energy Efficiency and Conservation Agency, “there is no unequivocal quantitative measure of energy efficiency; one must rely on a series of indicators relevant to the context.”
Cost and Benefits of Energy Efficiency
Bayer and Rosenow (2017) groups the benefits of implementing energy efficiency policies into three distinct categories; participants, utility systems, and societal. Those benefits that accrue directly to the participating individual households and businesses that install energy efficiency improvements, the benefits that accrue to the energy system through reduced costs in providing energy services to end-users, and the benefits that accrue more broadly to society― the community, the region, the nation, or the planet.
The European Commission notes that, by using energy more efficiently, energy demand can be reduced, leading to lower energy bills for consumers, lower emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and other pollutants, reduced need for energy infrastructure, and increased energy security through a reduction of imports. Moreover, there is a reduction in the likelihood of supply interruptions and a strengthened regional and national energy security because of reduced imports of oil, gas and coal.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) finds implementation of energy efficiency policies resulting in reduced need to add expensive new power generation or transmission capacity and by reducing pressure on energy resources. The decreased demand for energy services across the energy value chain or markets can prompt a reduction in energy prices. In the Global Energy and CO2 status report (2019) by IEA, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions stagnated between 2014 and 2016, even as the global economy continued to expand. The reason for this stagnation was strong improvements in energy efficiency and deployment of low-carbon technology, which led to a decline in coal demand.
The implementation of energy efficiency policies can be challenging, and the full potential far from realized, due to financial, behavioral and regulatory reasons. The European Parliament finds the obstacles as including high upfront investment costs, access to finance, lack of information, split incentives and rebound effects. Bayer and Rosenow (2017) classifies the costs of energy efficiency as programme costs, societal costs, administrative costs, and start-up costs that includes the establishment of new procedures, guidelines, training of staff, consultations et cetera. According to the European Commission, improvements in energy efficiency require an initial investment on the high side but generates a return over the lifetime of the investment in the form of energy savings.
In spite of the costs, the benefits being huge makes a strong case for one to adopt energy efficiency policies and goals. With energy cost remaining a significant line item in annual budgets of governments, corporate organizations, businesses, and households, energy efficiency policies cannot be overlooked. By investing in energy efficiency, energy consumers can achieve substantial energy cost savings across their facilities and homes, and demonstrate energy and environmental leadership in modern society.

ArcVera Renewables’ New Permanent Office In Cape Town Strengthens Operations In Southern Africa
ArcVera Renewables, a leading provider of consulting and technical services for wind, solar and energy storage projects, has set up a permanent office and new subsidiary company in Cape Town, strengthening its 6-year local presence to offer and meet the growing renewable energy ambitions of South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.
This move underpins South Africa’s growing importance as a strategic market for ArcVera Renewables.
South Africa leads the continent in installed renewable energy capacity with 3.5 GW of wind and 2.4 GW of solar.
As activity in the renewables market is ramping up, the company decided to reinforce its local presence with the creation of a new international office, establishing a platform from which to expand its activity across the region.
In addition to Cape Town, ArcVera has US headquarters in Golden, Colorado and international offices established in Sao Paulo, Brazil and Bangalore, India.
Daniel Struwig, ArcVera Renewable Energy Engineer, will be heading up the new business office, ArcVera Renewables South Africa (Pty) Ltd., leveraging his renewable energy project development expertise to lead business development and support existing clients together with the ArcVera technical team.
“The country is planning to install 6.8 GW of wind and solar projects. This is a significant long-term project pipeline for the industry. Competition is as fierce as ever and we are here to see our clients’ projects succeed. Present in South Africa for several years now, ArcVera has provided consultancy support for an estimated 600 MW of operating wind energy capacity in the country. The firm will now have the ability to trade using South African Rand to facilitate its business in the Sub-Saharan Africa region.
