Malawi’s President Arthur Peter Mutharika has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to increasing electricity generation over the next four years to improve nationwide electricity access.

The southeastern African nation currently has an installed generation capacity of 551 megawatts, with an electricity access rate of about 20 percent.

Delivering the State of the Nation Address (SONA) during the official opening of the Budget Meeting of Parliament of Malawi on Friday, President Mutharika said the country aims to expand power generation from the current 551 MW to 1,000 MW by the end of 2030.

“Our target is to raise generation capacity from the current 551 MW to over 1,000 MW by 2030,” the President said.

Touching on interventions in the petroleum sector, President Mutharika said the country hopes to double its fuel storage capacity from 60 million to 120 million litres by constructing new facilities in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu.
